Rural Remedy

Private Residence

After converting an historic barn into their primary residence, our clients sought to create an outdoor room for a lap pool and therapeutic spa.  The simple rectilinear form was chosen for the pool, as an overly complicated/curvilinear shape would present excessive visual competition with the appealing rustic architecture.  A raised stone wall was placed on the bond beam of the pool to tie in the vernacular building materials; a small water feature provides visual and audible interest.  The spa is for therapeutic purposes, and is thus built to a greater-than-typical depth.  It is on a separate set of equipment from the pool, enabling four-season use.  Both sets of equipment are housed in a new pool house, whose form is modeled after the adjacent barn.  The building is partitioned inside, with pool/spa equipment stashed on one side, and a changing area and potting shed formed on the other.  Lilac-colored flagstone used on the pool is a pleasant match to the indigenous red argillite building stone found throughout the property.  The pool deck was kept intentionally simple; rounded river stones provide a smooth walking surface.
